Top Tips to Properly Store Outgrown Clothing

“Hey Mama,

When it comes to preserving your Littlest Love's most treasured items — like their adorable outfits — I totally get how challenging it can be. I’ve been there, struggling to figure out how to keep all those precious clothes organized and safe.

But over time, I’ve learned that having a solid system in place makes all the difference.

Here are my top tips for storing your child’s outgrown clothing in a way that maximizes your space and keeps those tiny outfits in perfect condition:

  1. Sort and Organize by Size and Season
Before tucking those clothes away, sort them by size and season. It’s a lifesaver when you’re looking to reuse them later on. Be sure to label your boxes or bins so you can easily find what you need when the time comes.
  2. Clean and Prepare Clothing for Storage
Give everything a good wash to remove any stains or odors. And don’t forget to make sure the clothes are completely dry before storing them—this helps prevent any mold or mildew.
  3. Choose the Right Storage Containers
I’ve found that plastic bins with secure lids or vacuum-sealed bags work best for keeping clothes safe from dust, moisture, and pests. Go for regular-sized, clear bins—they’re stackable, easy to store, and you can see what’s inside at a glance without having to dig through them.
  4. Store in a Cool, Dry Place
Pick a spot in your home that’s cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Avoid places like attics, basements, or garages where temperature and humidity can fluctuate too much.
  5. Protect from Pests
Keep those pesky moths and insects away by adding cedar blocks, lavender sachets, or mothballs to your storage containers. Just make sure they don’t touch the fabrics directly.
  6. Label and Inventory Your Storage
Clearly label each bin with the size, season, and a brief description of what’s inside. An inventory list can also help you keep track of what’s stored and what might be needed for future littles or hand-me-downs.

And remember, it’s totally worth saving some of those little Mister’s outfits even if you have a Little Miss next. Many items are gender-neutral and can work for any baby, and accessories can always be tucked away in their own box.
